Speaker Bio

Ian Mutai is a technology leader with over 12 years of experience in software development, digital infrastructure, and climate-tech innovation. As Partner and Chief Technology Officer at Verst Carbon, he drives the design and deployment of transformative digital systems shaping Africa’s emerging carbon market ecosystem.


Among his notable achievements, Ian is leading the implementation of Kenya’s National Carbon Registry under the Ministry of Environment, guiding its technical architecture, interoperability, and Article 6 compliance. He has delivered carbon market platforms across Africa, including the ACMI Carbon Market Intelligence Platform used in Nigeria, Rwanda, and Ghana, and has developed advanced digital MRV (dMRV) systems and PayGo solutions that enable data-driven climate action and expand access to carbon finance for clean cooking initiatives, anchored on international standards such as Gold Standard methodologies.


His expertise spans both traditional and frontier technologies, including blockchain, AI, and IoT, with a proven record of architecting scalable, interoperable, and policy-aligned systems for climate and public-sector innovation. Ian also led the development of the mobile application, virtual dealroom, and AI-powered knowledge portal for the inaugural Africa Climate Summit 2023 in Nairobi; platforms that enhanced global engagement, transparency, and knowledge sharing during the event.


He holds an MSc in Information Systems and Technology and a BSc in Computer Software Engineering, alongside professional certifications in Ethereum Development, Docker/Kubernetes, and Prince2 Project Management. Based in Nairobi, Ian is recognized for bridging digital innovation and climate action to build inclusive, transparent, and future-ready carbon markets across Africa.
