Session Description

The GSMA Technology Summit brings together expert voices from the GSMA’s working groups aligned with the topics most relevant to operators across the African continent.

In the first part of this session we will address the transition from legacy 2G and 3G mobile networks to more advanced technologies across Africa. We will examine the motivations, challenges, and implications of phasing out older infrastructure, focusing on strategies to ensure continuity of service and mitigate disruption for users. Attendees will gain insights into practical approaches for managing device compatibility, supporting digital inclusion, and promoting sustainable growth as Africa moves towards a future powered by 4G, 5G, and beyond.

The second session will spotlight the adoption and impact of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology across Africa. We will explore how VoLTE is transforming voice communications, enabling high-quality calls, and supporting advanced mobile services on the continent. The discussion will address the current rollout status, technical challenges, and the integration of VoLTE with existing and emerging network infrastructures.

The final part focuses on Emergency Calls. We will provide a comprehensive overview of emergency call technology across Africa. We will convene to discuss the critical role of emergency communications in safeguarding public safety and supporting rapid response efforts, especially in remote and underserved regions. The session will examine the integration of emergency call services with modern mobile networks.
